About Me

Profile picture

Hello! I'm Loïc, an IT student at IMS Basel with a passion for technology and software development.

On this page, I will tell you a bit more about myself as a student in Information Technology.

My background

I still remember the time, when I made an Arduino do what I asked it to do. This was the moment, when I knew that IT was my way to go. Since then, I joined two kind of clubs at school with the topic of IT. To be honest, one of them was just a "how to use some software correctly" or "do some fun stuff away from programming". The other one told me some stuff about programming, starting with Tiger Jython and ending with creating a game in C# with Unity (which has never been finished).

Unfortunately the "club" lasted only one year, but it still gave me the motivation to keep my passion for IT programming. In the last semester of my school, I heard about IMS Basel and their IT program where I immediately applied to. At first, I told myself that it was the best decision of my life, but I was partially wrong. The program turned out different than I expected. It was more theory-focused than I'd hoped, which pushed me to become more self-directed with my learning. I started building projects in my spare time to get the hands-on experience I was craving.

What I'm Learning

In my past three years of theory-focused IT education, I've gained a solid foundation in computer science principles, algorithms, and software design. There were quite a lot of technologies we looked at, like HTML, CSS, JavaScript, SQL, NoSQL, Python, Java, PHP and lastly even C#, the technology I'm currently learning. However, I felt that I needed more practical experience, so I started building projects on my own.

When talking about my current projects, I have to say that I'm currently learning a lot about web development, especially with JavaScript and its ecosystem. Simultaneously I code in Java too, on a project combining two of my other passions, video games, especially Minecraft, and the theme parc Europa-Park. Most recently, my school launched an e-commerce project in C#, which has been great hands-on practice.

Beyond the Code

I also have a lot of other passions in various domains. For example, I love music and sing in a choir at school. I also enjoy sports, especially volleyball and fitness training. I joined a volleyball club near me and since then, I go there on a regular basis. Another passion of mine is going to theme parks, especially the one named Europa-Park, which is the biggest one in Germany and also one of the best ones in the world.

My main hobby next to programming is nearly the opposite. Since 2015 I am a member of the local scouts group and for the past three years I am part of the leaders of this scouts group. In addition I am known as the IT-dude there. Beyond my local scouts group, I also do some radio moderation in a monthly radio show for the regional scouts organization.

What's Next

Looking ahead, I'm excited to continue my journey in the world of IT and software development. I plan to deepen my knowledge in web development and explore new technologies and frameworks. I'm also interested in cyber security, which is quite a hot topic in the IT world right now. In the long term, I hope to succeed my bachelor and then maybe even do a master in IT or a related field. I also want to gain more practical experience through internships and projects, and eventually work in a company where I can contribute to meaningful projects and continue learning and growing as a developer.
